The team that keeps you moving

Kelly

Owner | Mentor | Principal Pilates Educator | Business Woman of the Year 2022

Kelly Leonardi is a comprehensively certified Pilates instructor, educator, and studio owner with nearly four decades of experience in movement education. She founded Blue Moon Pilates in Mission Viejo, California, in 2002, building it into one of the world’s leading Balanced Body Authorized Education Centers, known for excellence in training and for its heart-centered, inclusive community.

Since 2013, Kelly has served as a Principal Educator for Balanced Body Education, teaching comprehensive certification courses, designing numerous workshops, and mentoring instructors worldwide through her Mentoring with Kelly sessions. She also holds national certification through the NCPT, along with advanced credentials in CoreAlign, MOTR, BODHI, BB-Barre, the Konnector, the Pink Ribbon Program, and the American Ballet Theatre’s National Training Curriculum. Kelly’s purpose is to preserve the integrity of Joseph Pilates’ work while mentoring future generations of instructors, and she continues to create and lead continuing education workshops across special modalities.

Before founding Blue Moon, Kelly enjoyed a 15-year career as a professional ballet dancer, performing nationally and internationally in both classical and contemporary repertoire. From 2015 to 2024, she also served on the faculty of the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, mentoring and training eight graduating classes.

“What I love most about my studio is witnessing the ripple effect of movement, whether it’s clients discovering what they can do, my team growing within the business, or our community shining together. I feel honored to lead a talented, curious, and caring group that’s so kind to each other.”

Heidi

Trainer, Balanced Body Educator

Heidi has performed as a dancer, acrobat, and aerialist for companies including Disney and Holland America Line. She began studying Pilates in 2004 under the guidance of Karen Clippinger, later earning her comprehensive BASI Pilates certification with a specialization in dance. Heidi went on to receive her Pre/Postnatal Pilates Doula Certification through Leah Stewart of LiveLife Pilates.

Today, Heidi serves as a Balanced Body Educator at Blue Moon Pilates and holds a national certification through NCPT, offering her own continuing education workshops for Pilates teachers. Her work has been featured in The Core by Balanced Body, on Balanced Body’s online video platform, and in the Pocket Pilates app.

Deeply rooted in her faith, Heidi believes every person who walks through the door whether a student teacher, or Pilates enthusiast, deserves the freedom to grow and to make mistakes. As Albert Einstein said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” Heidi finds her greatest joy in watching clients gain confidence and seeing student teachers blossom into skilled, knowledgeable instructors. For her, there is nothing more gratifying than being part of someone’s learning journey.

“I love the team at Blue Moon Pilates and the way they are constantly learning from each other and keeping the client’s needs at the forefront. The best part of being a trainer is being able to take someone out of their comfort zone to achieve the movement they deemed impossible. My favorite hobby is working out, but I also love trail walks with my husband. AND I am absolutely crushing my goal to read one book a month!”

Angela

Trainer

Angela was previously a Ballerina for almost all of her adolescent/young adult life and professionally for 5 years after being hired at a young 17 years old. She has toured across the country performing many classical and contemporary ballets. During her professional years, she taught students of all ages and choreographed many works with State Street Ballet and Nevada Ballet Theatre. She began Pilates as a cross training tool while dancing and became Balance Body Pilates Certified under Kelly at Blue Moon Pilates.

“Blue Moon Pilates is such an amazing team to be a part of. The encouraging all inclusive energy is magnetic and I love watching my clients grow in their practice.”

Kari

Trainer

After a career as a professional dancer with Ballet Pacifica and attending Southern Methodist University in Texas and Cal State Fullerton, Kari was certified through DK Body Balancing, accredited by the University of Nevada and Arizona State Boards of Physical Therapists. She has been training clients for over 20 years

“Teaching at Blue Moon Pilates is a special experience. The atmosphere is positive, supportive and welcoming. Working with the wonderful Blue Moon clients is the best part! I love watching individuals grow stronger, and improve their practice with each new session. When I am not teaching my favorite hobby is being a student of Pilates! (Almost as much as I like teaching!) I also love ballet, hiking with my son and husband and knitting.”

Shelley

Trainer

Living with Lupus is what brought Shelley to Pilates over 20 years ago. Instead of relying on medication for pain management, she focused on a major lifestyle change and re-learned how to manage stress. It was during this time she was introduced to Mat Pilates and it quickly became Shelley's main form of physical and mental exercise. After suffering a deep oblique injury, and patiently taking the full year needed to recover, she decided to transition away from the corporate world and to commit to Pilates full time. Shelley became an Instructor through the Balanced Body Program, taking all courses at Blue Moon Pilates and started not only a new chapter, but a whole new book in her life.

"Pilates increases circulation immediately, which then aids in decreasing inflammation from flare ups. It's the perfect balance for me and I'm excited to share that with others. I get to spend my work day with clients that want to get better, be better, stay better. I now have the the wonderful opportunity to work at Blue Moon Pilates where the whole staff operates as a family unit and I'm very grateful for that"

Laura

Trainer

Laura is a former elementary school teacher and holds a B.A. in Biology from CSULB and a Master in Education from Concordia University, Irvine.

Pilates has been a part of her life for over 18 years. Finding the connection to mind, body, and breath was a life changer. She began practicing pilates and teaching elementary school in the same year. Pilates allowed her to stand, squat, and keep up with littles all day long!

Her pilates education is through Balanced Body under the guidance of Kelly Leonardi and Blue Moon Pilates. Laura is also a certified yoga teacher.

In her spare time, she loves to practice pilates and yoga, read, and spend time with family and friends.

Sarah R

Trainer

Throughout her life, Sarah has practiced numerous sports and explored a variety of exercise modalities. Upon discovering Pilates, she was immediately drawn to the depth and complexity of the practice. Upon graduating from UC Santa Cruz with her BA in Anthropology, Sarah moved back home to Orange County to pursue a career that would allow her to share her love of movement with others. After becoming certified and starting to teach yoga, her inquisitive personality led her to continue her education in Pilates. She completed her Balanced Body comprehensive Pilates training here at Blue Moon, under the guidance of Kelly and Heidi, and continues to enjoy working alongside such talented, like-minded instructors.

Stacia

Trainer

Stacia has been passionate about athletics from a young age, excelling as a D1 NCAA volleyball player. She earned the NSCA All-American award and helped lead her team to the NAU Hall of Fame. After graduating from Northern Arizona University with a BS in Exercise Science, she pursued her Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

Stacia believes deeply in the connection between the mind and body for healing and wellness, integrating faith and movement into her practice. She discovered the power of combining Pilates and physical therapy during her training at Blue Moon Pilates, where she completed her Balanced Body comprehensive certification . Stacia loves being part of the Blue Moon team and thrives in its supportive, collaborative environment.

Her dedication to helping others and her passion for both Pilates and physical therapy make her an integral part of the Blue Moon family, as she continues to guide clients toward better health and well-being.

Graycen

Trainer

Graycen was first introduced to pilates over the course of her ballet training. She trained right here in Orange County and also attended Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy. Her appreciation for pilates led her to start as a client at Blue Moon Pilates before joining the team. She has a background in customer service and administration in the beauty industry and enjoys being able to work alongside clients and trainers in a business she feels passionate about.

“What I love most about working at Blue Moon Pilates is being able to provide a space to offer meaningful connections between clients and trainers. It’s not just a Pilates studio where you get your exercise in and then leave; it’s a place that has cultivated a supportive community that continues to stay strong.”

Sarah M

Trainer

Sarah Mullen has been active in athletics her entire life. She discovered Pilates while recovering from a back injury, and it quickly became a daily practice that transformed her approach to movement and wellness.

She completed her comprehensive Pilates education for Balanced Body at Blue Moon Pilates, where she developed a strong foundation in classical and contemporary Pilates methods across all apparatus.

Sarah loves that Pilates is a lifelong practice always offering something new to learn and explore. Outside the studio, she enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, reading, traveling, and visiting art museums.

“What I like most about Blue Moon Pilates is its inclusivity. From the moment you walk in the door, stigmas fall away, and all that matters is the individual and that person’s needs and goals. The community creates something special that you simply cannot find anywhere else.”

Sonali

Trainer

Sonali grew up playing soccer, so movement always came naturally to her, but it led to injuries that made staying active tough later on. After college, she discovered Pilates and instantly fell in love. It helped her feel strong and free in her body again, something she hadn’t felt in years. Pretty quickly, she realized she wanted to share that feeling with others.

After completing her training through Balanced Body and Blue Moon, she left the corporate world to teach Pilates full time and hasn’t looked back since.

“I love that from the moment you walk into Blue Moon you are surrounding by friendly smiles and warmth. Everyone is a team, a family, there is no completion or egos and it’s such a refreshing feeling from the outside world to see everyone supporting each other and growing together.”

Rachel

Trainer

Having grown up active and going to the gym with her parents, Rachel has enjoyed various workouts through the years. Many moons ago, in 2008, she cautiously walked into a Pilates studio and asked the owner what in the world Pilates was… and before she knew it, she was hooked. Not only did she find a changed body, but she also discovered the mind-body aspect of Pilates that continues to bring her mental clarity and balance. It quickly became the one exercise that allowed her to completely step away from her corporate job for an hour a few times a week.

In 2016, Rachel began her Comprehensive Pilates training through Balanced Body at Blue Moon Pilates ATC with Kelly's guidance, initially to deepen her practice. That journey grew into a passion for teaching, and today she is a Comprehensive Pilates Instructor, sharing her love of movement with clients.

If you don’t see her teaching, she’s most likely enjoying a Pilates class, skiing, hiking, hitting the beach, visiting her boys in college, or entertaining with family and friends.

“What I love about Blue Moon is that it is truly a complete studio filled with all of the Pilates apparatuses as well as experienced trainers full of knowledge who look forward to supporting each client in their own Pilates journey.”

Taryn

Trainer, Nutritional Therapist

Taryn was a figure skater for 15 years, competing and completing her senior gold medal tests, eventually dancing full time. Pilates came into the mix early on as a form of physical therapy for a sustained back injury. After skating, she spent a few years traveling with LA Dance Magic and dancing professionally before deciding it was time to further invest in her Pilates education. She received her training from Balanced Body right here at Blue Moon Pilates. She has experience working with clients of all levels, backgrounds, and capabilities.

“I love the Blue Moon team’s encouraging and collaborative way of working! While we all support the same philosophy, everyone can embody their own style, which makes for a truly inspiring workplace. The greatest gift is being able to help someone feel more at home in their body, and it is an honor to be a part of that process. When I am not teaching, I love anything that gets me outside! Bike rides, taking my pug for long walks, beach picnics, and trying to keep my veggie garden alive.”
